1987 VW Scirocco

Purchased in 2006 from Dorian of max001House of Boost, the car came heavily modified with SDS EM-1 stand alone fuel management, suspension, wheels and a P1200b Procharger made for a 5.0 Mustang.  Dorian tracked the car several times, running 13psi pushing roughly 270hp and recording an impressive 13.2 1/4 mi on street tires.  After  a few transmissions and a tired motor, Dorian dropped in a fresh 2.0 bottom end, a new transmission, and tuned it down to 6psi @ 200hp a few months before I brought it home.

In late 2006 the Scirocco was in an unfortunate accident.  The car was strapped to a tow dolly for transporting it to our new house.  Along the way the truck turned a sharp turn and steep incline causing the the car to slip off the dolly and roll into a parked vehicle.  This was a very odd incident however the control arm straps were never put on allowing it to come off at this extreme angle.  The front bumper, hood, headlights, grille and more were damaged beyond repair.  I ended up buying an 85 Scirocco shell to help rebuild the car. A new core support along with many body parts were used.

Over the following year we took the opportunity to completely revamp the styling of the car.  Seeing as the front end needed to be replaced I went ahead and ordered lights and bumpers from Europe.  We also removed the stock 16v body kit, shaved the rear hatch, and replaced the wheels for a completely different look.  Once the car was repaired, and prepped for paint I delivered the car to fellow VW enthusiast and friend Rob Lackey owner of Shifty’s Spraywerkz in Oklahoma City.  Rob and team filled over 25 hole

s, fixed all of the rust, repaired any dents, and sprayed the car with Black Diamond Pearl found on the 2004 Subaru STI. Once home I fitted the car with a set of 14×7 / 14×8 RSL Cults and later replaced the 10 year old Bilstine Sports with a new set and coilover sleeves and springs.  A solid 25mm rear sway was added to tighten up the rear end.

In June of 2007 we mpunchbug_cincy_sciroccoade our first trip to Cincinnati OH for the annual Scirocco Get Together.  We were greeted with much anticipation and ended up making great friends and checking out some amazing cars, all Scirocco of course. This trip became an annual event as our house became a stopping point for anyone driving from out west.  Grilled burgers and dogs, a few beers and good conversation.  Making the 12 hour journey next to several Sciroccos, a very good day indeed.

Between 2007 and 2008 the engine bay started to become the focus of concern as many of the original parts were worn, along side some of the after market and fabricated pieces.  The supercharger bracket was a major piece to this puzzle and took several tries by a few differnet folks to get it right.  I myself am no fabricator and with as custom and complex as this system is I knew I needed to reach out for assistance.  Our final design was created by Brandon Maxey.  Using many of the original bracket designs, we improved the structural integrity of the bracket and moved to 1/2″ aluminum.  We ditched the stock alternator and moved to a 120A Volvo s40 alternator.  The beauty of using this particular alternator was the way it rotates. The design called for a counter clockwise spinning unit.  Worked like a charm and gave the car a bit more voltage to help support the stereo.  Not only did we upgrade the supercharger bracket, but I also took the time to break down the rest of the bay and clean it up.  Jason Provo assisted in powdercoating the newly finished supercharger bracket, intake manifold, valve cover, and a box of assorted engine bay parts.  While all of that stuff was off I took the time to redo some of the old wiring and hide a few things.  In late 2008 I replaced the RSL Cults with a set of 15×8 / 15×9 BCW Powertech’s.  The larger rims gave the car a much better stance and an overall cleaner look.

2009 The car was fitted with a few details and little things.  Foreseeable future includes adding more boost and tweaking the tune.  I’d like to see 230WHP at around 10psi.  Should be do able while keeping with 92 oct.  The transmission is also up for some new fluids and possibly a limited slip diff.  One big headache I’d like to get rid of as well is the sunroof.  Riddled with problems, even on new parts, I’m at my end.  Looking to replace with a new rag top system.

The project never ends….
